Choosing The Right Children's Doctor

1

Pediatricians are an important part of every child’s growth and development throughout their childhood and formative years. However, some parents may not understand just what makes a pediatrician so important and necessary. Learn more about pediatrics and children’s doctors with your doctor at Johns Creek Pediatrics, P.C. with two locations, Suwanee and Cumming, GA.

What is a pediatrician?

Pediatricians are medical doctors who specialize in the care of children, teenagers and young adults up to the age of 21. Pediatricians go through medical school like other doctors. After graduating with their medical degree, they go on to undergo a residency and further education program of three years to earn their pediatrician titles. After their residency, a pediatrician becomes board-eligible. This means that the pediatrician can take an examination to become board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

What does a pediatrician do?

While pediatricians focus on children’s health, diagnosing and treating issues like infections or injuries, they also monitor children’s growth and development throughout their lives, ensuring they hit their growth and development milestones on time. Additionally, pediatricians keep track of social and personality development and look for signs of personality disorders, depression and other developmental disorders which could hinder a child’s social or educational life.

What is a well child visit?

A well child visit occurs once a year and gives your doctor a chance to monitor your child’s physical and developmental milestones to ensure that they are growing on track for their age. Your pediatrician will check your child’s height, weight, vision and other developmental markers. Your doctor will also administer any vaccinations which your child requires.
